International Furniture Flair, the Macon Telegraph, August 23, 2004

After stints living in India, West Germany, Zambia , San Francisco and New York, Shyam Garg hopes his move to Macon will be his last. Garg, who has lived in Macon nine years, has long been in the import/export business as president of Sonal Imports International. With help from his family back in the Jaipur region of India, he owns five factories with 200 employees that produce furniture, home decor and apparel. “I used to do warehousing and marketing of these products nationally in the wholesale market,” Garg said. Last October, he opened the downtown boutique The Beaded Lady and in early June, he opened Sonal Imports International, a 25,000-square-foot furniture showroom on Gateway Drive, at a cost of $1 million. It’s part of a plan to travel less and spend more time with his family, Garg said. “Now I want to stay home and do the marketing through interior designers and sales agents,” Garg said. Sales is in his blood, he said. At his father’s insistense, he got his CPA and a law degree in India. The accounting experience has helped him in business, he said. “(Selling) has been my aptitude from day one,” Garg said. “My family and friends said I’d be more suited selling cars or furniture than being an accountant, and they were right.” In the past, he’s attended furniture shows in Atlanta and High Point, NC. A good portion of his market tradionally has consisted of Indian-born professionals, so Garg has made connections with Indian medical associations and hoteliers. Dr. Pravin Jain, a Macon physician and friend of Garg’s, said he’s been a customer since Garg moved to town. “It’s pretty unique furniture. You don’t get that just anywhere,” Jain said. Jain said Garg has been fair and honest in his dealings, which builds trust in the community. “They’re committed to this town, he and his wife,” Jain said. Garg said he was drawn to Middle Georgia after his wife, Sucheta, an emergency room physician, got a job here. He stayed for the people and the weather, he said. “Macon’s a beautiful place. It’s one of the most best places in the U.S.,” Garg said. “The people are so good, and the climate is similar to some of the places I’ve lived.” With the showroom and boutique, Garg said he hopes to bring his international flavor to a broader range of customers. “Basically, I wanted to bring Indian cultural history in the form of beaded dresses and furniture,” Garg said. “Our artisians and craftsmen are brilliant. Art runs in their systems.” Handcrafted and one-of-a-kind items abound in the showroom, including rosewood furniture imported from Indonesia and antique Indian doors that have been converted to armoires and tables. Oriental rugs hang from the ceiling and colorful, rich fabrics adorn the showroom. One corner is devoted to refinishing furniture, while shelves are heavy with imported candles, quilts, and vases. Garg’s business partner, interior decorator Lynn Gunter, helps meld his furniture sets with clients’ homes. Gunter has a way with fabrics, upholstery, and floral arrangements that clients love, Garg said. “We’ve worked together for about seven years,” Garg said. “She’s a great asset.” Garg isn’t content with just the downtown boutique and showroom. He has plans for a total of 100,000 square feet of space in the industrial park on Gateways Drive. “My ultimate goal is provide the ultimate home furnishings to Macon, Ga., and the whole country,” he said.
